Repair, Replace, Recondition: What’s a dash pot ? Dashpots are designed for breaker overload trip units to achieve a time delay so the breaker won’t open caused by a current surge. When there’s load current excess, it attracts the solenoid plunger.
Dashpot applications include relays needing a delay using a piston filled with fluid that escapes gradually. Switchgear use dashpots in the sensing mech reducing reaction speed to brief interruptions, they reduce sensitivity to false-triggering while staying sensitive to overcurrents. Dashpots also delay closing or opening of an electrical circuit.
The two most common types of dashpots are linear and rotary.
