Insulated Case Breaker Maintenance: Visual Inspection and Preventive Maintenance

  1. Verify Application and Rating

    • Ensure the breaker is properly applied within specified voltage and ampere ratings.
  2. Check for Overheating (Energized)

    • Use an infrared probe to check for temperatures above 60°C and investigate if exceeded.
  3. Thermographic Inspection

    • Use thermographic methods to assess overheating while equipment is energized.
  4. Inspect for Cracks

    • Replace any breaker with a cracked molded case.
  5. Inspect Enclosure

    • Ensure the enclosure is clean, dry, and complete with all covers.
  6. Check for Overheating (De-energized)

    • Look for discoloration indicating overheating; avoid disturbing connections if no issues are found.
  7. Inspect Connections

    • Address overheating in copper and aluminum connections following specific guidelines.
  8. I-Line™ Panelboard Connections

    • Replace breakers with pitted, discolored, or deformed jaws and reapply joint compound if removed.
  9. Drawout Connections

    • Replace discolored or deformed drawout connections and reapply lubrication.
  10. Torque Connections

  • Ensure all connections are torqued to specified values.
  1. Exercise Mechanism
  • Toggle handle on/off, trip with the push-to-trip button, and ensure proper reset.
  1. Inspect Visi-Trip LED
  • Verify functionality by operating the push-to-trip button and check battery health.
