During power surges, the overload charges an electromagnet to trip a switch and stop the electrical connection and shut down power. Shunt trip breakers have an exterior power source.

This one is an ITE/Siemens KB Dashpot for Switchgear. Dashpots on switchgear allow the overload trip to have time delay so breakers won’t open because of a current surge.

Excess current attracts the plunger causing it to go up against the viscose oil or silicone liquid through a the piston’s hole.
